The IBV is a best-seller, but does it stack up?

The Casio IBV, a best-selling dive watch, outranks the M-Force by a considerable margin on Amazon.com. One reason might be the price. At $400 to $700 the price of the Orient M-Force reflects its considerable quality and the pride that’s been taken in its construction. By contrast, the Casio IBV can be had for just under $20.

The Casio IBV can only make it to 330 feet, half of what the Orient M-Force is capable of handling. It is made of resin and looks pretty cheap, making it difficult to compare it to the shining stainless steel of the Orient M-Force. It’s definitely an “economy” watch, something that does the bare minimum of what a dive watch is supposed to do. Of course, if $20 is your price point the Casio IBV may indeed be a good option. However, if you have more to spend it quickly becomes apparent that having a “best seller” status can be pretty meaningless.

Is this one a better buy?

The Invicta Pro-Diver’s Collection watch is another best-selling dive watch. This one does a better job of stacking up to the Orient M-Force than the IBV did. For one thing, according to the specs, at least, it matches the Orient M-Force for depth capability. It also has luminous hands and stainless steel construction.

It’s smaller, however, and the bevel can be much more difficult to turn. There’s also no power meter to warn you of the possibility that your watch is going to stop. Some users have also reported problems with the water-resistant feature on the Invicta. Reviews have noted watches that got water damaged during the course of normal water activities, like showering. Ultimately, the Invicta is more of a look-alike watch that doesn’t offer nearly as much quality or luxury as the Orient M-Force, proving yet again that a Top 10 spot can essentially be meaningless.
